Nothing to see here: CJ Cup, Congaree Golf Club, October 16-19, 2022

We tried to find a good place to buy or drink wine near Congaree Golf Club, the new home of the 2022 CJ Cup north of Ridgeland, SC. We couldn’t, at least from afar. No wonder, when even Golf Digest says it’s “in the middle of nowhere South Carolina.” Yet while Congaree is only a few years old, Golf Digest ranks it #48 in the US. It has only one member, a billionaire, and several hundred “ambassadors” dedicated to philanthropic service. There’s a very interesting story here, but it’s not about wine!

Our advice is to take a 50-minute ride to Savannah upon arrival and buy a few bottles down there you can drink either on your own or at a restaurant back in SC, assuming corkage is permitted.

Savannah itself wasn’t all that easy to unpack either. We were able to verify a limited, but decent online selection at the Savannah Wine Cellar, which clocks in at 54 minutes from the golf course on google maps. It won’t blow your doors off, but the basics are covered, and the prices are fair. They advertise the ability to taste 40 wines at any point in time, which can help a lot if the inventory is unfamiliar. And they take special orders with the promise that if it’s available in Georgia, they’ll do their best. With enough lead time that may be the way to go.
