Is there a s-a-l-u-t in T-u-l-s-a? PGA Championship, Southern Hills, May 19-22, 2022

Wow, it’s going to be hard to talk about the retail store wine scene in Tulsa, site of the 2022 PGA Championship, without sounding a touch condescending. I surveyed 15 wine store websites and could only find one with enough gumption (or the technical ability) to post their inventory online. Good thing, because I was starting to suspect it must be illegal to do it in Oklahoma. However, in a Swig Coach first, an Instagram reader @best.tulsa.restaurants chimed in at the last minute to confirm the restaurant scene is alive and well (see below) Big shout out, that’s the way it should work!

Half of the retail sites I saw are single pages or even worse, just plain ol’ Facebook pages.  The website photo of Parkhill’s Warehouse Wines and Liquors makes it look enormous and they say their “wine list is beyond compare.” That’s literally true because there’s no way to compare it to anything. Five star google-rated Sip House Wine and Spirits, get this, has nothing at all on the page but a form you can fill out to get a quote!

You might want to get that quote before buying a Stella Artois at the tournament itself, where the going rate is $19 a pop.

  • Polo Grill seems to be recognized as the only real restaurant destination for wine in town, but again, no list in sight. Polo devotes a full page to describing what a great wine list they have without revealing a durn thing, but in fairness they claim to have 25,000 bottles in inventory “showcasing 1478 vintages”. Does that mean they have wines dating back to the 8th century?

  • Mahogany Prime Steakhouse, a chain with three locations in Oklahoma, has a deep if predictable California list and is an option if you’re jonesin’ for something drinkable. God bless them for posting their list.

  • Prhyme Steakhouse has a nice eclectic list with a little of everything and a solid foot in California. Definitely makes the cut.

  • Vintage Wine Bar has a little bit of everything and gets bonus points for a sense of fun, reasonable prices and New World trousseau and teroldego offerings.
