No Bambino’s curse for Boston’s rocking wine scene: The US Open, The Country Club, June 16-19, 2022
Not that I know him, but I’ve always liked Justin Thomas for the way he plays the game and his public persona. Until this morning, that is, when I learned he’s a Red Sox fan via an uncle of his who’s from New England. Oh, well. There’s no shortage of other young guns to cheer for. Just remember, the Yankees are my Daddy.
Speaking of Boston, you may have heard they are playing a golf tournament in Beantown this week. And despite this flatulence-inducing nickname, there’s plenty of good wine to be had in Boston along with your legumes. In fact, there are too many options to profile so we’re going to highlight one store and one restaurant and provide links to a bunch of others. In other words, enjoy The US Open and open a few good bottles while you’re at it.
Gordon’s without hesitation is the best wine store we could find in Boston and environs. With five locations and a robust online presence, they do it all. They tilt toward the Old World but nothing gets short shrift. Tremendous presence in Burgundy, Piedmont, and Bordeaux. Let’s be honest, this is about as good a store as you’ll find anywhere.
The nearly 100-page wine list at Grill 23 almost left me speechless for multiple reasons. It’s jammed with verticals of the world’s best wines and features just about anything you could imagine in the realm of trophy wines. Prices are “g-astronomical” and they must have a random number generator choosing the actual price of each bottle cause they’re idiosyncratic at best. If you’re looking to spend less, they have a lot of great wine under $100 but you must hunt for them. This is nitpicky but given all the available treasures elsewhere on the list, the Nebbiolo section could be a little stronger. I’ve heard they also serve food :-)
In no particular order, here are some other strong restaurant lists to try during Open Week. Check the map and choose perhaps based on where you’re staying: Abe & Louie’s, Harvest, Lucca , Sorellina, Alcove (smaller list but well-chosen and without nosebleed prices), Mariel, Troquet, your favorite here…
